Task II – Revise One Paragraph

This paragraph is attempting to criticize the order of which and how the curriculum themes are taught.

Even though, the material taught by UNE is well rounded and informative, the order and process of which it is taught can be confusing. Critical thinking is the third year theme, where critical thinking is actually taught since freshman year. In classes like ENG 110, critical thinking is a skill that is not only taught but required. Also critical thinking should be taught freshman year and emphasized then, not the third year in college. Critical thinking is important for every year in college and every year after college. Along with teaching critical thinking in the third year, UNE teaches civic engagement senior year. It’s important to learn civic engagement freshman year because for most students it’s the first year where they can finally vote. Students need to be informed on civic engagement so they can make the right decision, in their mind, when voting.

Revision:

Even though, the material taught by UNE is well rounded and informative, the order and process of which it is taught can be confusing. Critical thinking is the third year theme, where critical thinking is actually taught since freshman year. In classes like ENG 110, critical thinking is a skill that is not only taught but required. Also it should be taught freshman year and emphasized then, not the third year in college because, “critical thinking is a key part of that shared epistemology, a set of skills that apply across the liberal arts curriculum” (Scheuer). Critical thinking is important for every year in college and every year after college. Along with teaching critical thinking in the third year, UNE teaches civic engagement senior year. It’s important to learn civic engagement freshman year because for most students it’s the first year where they can finally vote. Civic engagement requires students to, “listen… to all points of view and not relying on a single ideology” (Ungar). Students need to be informed on civic engagement so they can make the right decision, in their mind, when voting. These skills of critical thinking and civic engagement take more than just a year to learn. Students are groomed throughout their life for these skills, and so by teaching them in one year can make it confusing and pressuring.
