Boyer/Selected Major
Selecting a major can be hard with knowing what is the right choice with so many possibilities out in the world. It is important that majors include and discuss the ways in which they prepare students for a life beyond school. UNE offers an applied exercise science program that stresses, “a strong foundation for graduate and professional school in allied health programs” (UNE). In order to build this foundation they teach topics and information that can be applied to various fields of study and careers. With UNE’s curriculum, a, “student can move from depth to breadth as departments put the specialty in larger context” (Boyer 110). UNE includes courses that are specific to certain fields of study within applied exercise science and also ones that are general to the major that benefit the students’ learning and outcomes.
Demonstrating knowledge is a key aspect in any field of study, but especially in a field in the health professions. A way of demonstrating knowledge and learning is with, “the primacy of the object as evidence of success in learning to perform the act, the doing of performance” (Carter 400). With the “successful” completion of the applied exercise science major students will be able to demonstrate and, “Participate in activities to promote life-long learning and professional development” (UNE). Students must perform what they learn so that they can better understand and help their patients and clients later on in life.
