UNE strongly believes in the implementation of critical thinking and facing diverse challenges. Along with critical thinking and facing challenges, UNE wants students to develop an awareness of society and environment. They want to prepare students for the outside world, and want to do this through using liberal arts. The university wants students to, “develop foundational knowledge and critical thinking skills that are necessary for understanding and assuming their roles in natural, social, humanistic, and other environments” (CAS Core Handbook 2). These are real life application skills that will prepare students for life after college. UNE does this by providing a wide variety of diverse courses, and not just through the use of the arts. UNE uses the liberal arts teaching technique because it, “encompass the broadest possible range of disciplines in the natural sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences” (Ungar). UNE offers courses such as biology, English, statistics, and Spansih. There are also many more classes and courses that allow for students to explore many possibilities in the world and society in which they live. UNE wants its students to be successful, and therefore provide their students with a knowledge that encapsulates teachings and information that will help them. In the end, “students [will] demonstrate application, synthesis, and integration of knowledge and skills central to a liberal arts education” (CAS Core Handbook 2). UNE’s use of liberal arts is for general knowledge, but also specifics in the key areas of students’ lives.
